Alaska sojourn, part 2...

Greetings to all my readers melting in the August heat. I'm listening to my air conditioner cha-chinging away, wondering where I'll shave of some funds to pay a most undoubtably high bill for this past month. It's been humid here in my desert which means the evaporative cooler just makes it worse. Ah well, I'll count my blessings that I even have an alternative to keeping sanely cool during this hottest part of our summer........

Here is one image of glacial ice etched with spires and crevices to help cool your mind.

And, yes. It is that vibrant of a turquoise blue in real life - even more so up close, which we were able to get. You could hear the creaking and groaning as the ice shifted. And the size is deceiving in this photo. The glacial ice in the foreground is probably 4-5 stories high. If our ship were photographed next to it, we'd look like a pin dot. Massive energy.

Thanks Janis. I can't even begin to do the reality of the Alaskan landscape justice in a photograph nor will I pretend to. At least you get an idea....

I am having trouble picking up my camera lately. The spark of creativity is buried underneath a pallor of human unkindnesses. Can't watch the news or read the internet or walk through the staffroom without feeling personally assaulted in some way. The world outside is coming alive with wonderful spring light and peeps of color. The air is warm and alive with happy chirps and the whir of wings as life gets busy making more life. Here is another shot from this past weekend in my beloved park....more for the benefit of my distant readers (and maybe those of you close by who haven't taken the opportunity to explore this beautiful area...). Considered the cornerstone of Joshua Tree National Park, this particular photo is of the Oasis of Mara which is a short and pleasant nature walk down a paved path from the national park headquarters / visitor center. When my daughter worked as an interpretative ranger there before sailing off into the Navy, she had the most interesting stories of what was witnessed just outside the large picture windows from inside the visitor center. One story that stuck in my mind, both kind of funny and sort of 'gross' if you aren't used to the ways of nature, centered around some European tourists experiencing desert life in all its glory one hot summer day.
